Milieu

Milieu is a 25 minute, looped video installation projected onto a split three dimensional screen. Milieu consists of generative graphics created in response to the abstract electro-acoustic composition of Roger Doyle’s Passades.

Working with music software which captures sounds like a freeze-frame in video, making sound movement stop, or go forwards or backwards slowly, Roger Doyle began work on the Passades in early 2002, initially composing a 12 minute piece. By the Autumn of 2003, 49 minutes of Passades were 'finished' . In Milieu the Opening and the first 2 sets have been used.

I worked with Roger on several occasions before undertaking Milieu. This project, commisioned for the City arts centre for their 'haunted' season, was a chance to explore the relationship between abstract sound and image and present it to maximum impact in a designed environment. Milieu has been the first place where my knowledge of 3D and realtime graphics have intersected.
