Milieu is created using an unconventional performance-based workflow.
I create abstract moving imagery using a free music visualisation engine, subverted with custom plugins written in C++ to control footage and generative shapes using MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface). This workflow allows a performance approach in real-time response to the music. This can resemble a sort of ‘MIDI Etch-a-Sketch’ with additional controlled video feedback allowing a range of perspective land/sky scapes to be fashioned as well as more abstract patterns. The nonlinearities caused by shortcuts in the motion algorithms are also exploited as a non-intuitive graphic device. These outputs are then recorded and finally edited conventionally to create a DVD video for projection.
